Liberty Starts in Brooklyn!

Welcome to the Brooklyn Libertarian Party — where liberty meets the heartbeat of New York City’s most dynamic borough.

In Brooklyn, we celebrate individuality, creativity, and resilience. From the iconic bridges that connect us to the world, to the communities that thrive here through voluntary cooperation and free exchange, this borough has always embodied the spirit of personal freedom.

We stand for:

  • Individual rights — Your life, your body, your choices belong to you alone.
  • Free markets — Economic liberty that lifts everyone through innovation and voluntary trade, not government mandates.
  • Peace & non-aggression — Ending the war on drugs, the surveillance state, and foreign entanglements that drain our resources and freedoms.
  • Local empowerment — Reducing centralized control so Brooklynites can solve problems at the community level, without Albany or Washington interference.

Whether you’re fed up with overregulation choking small businesses, endless taxes funding things you never asked for, or politicians who treat personal liberties as bargaining chips — you’re not alone.

Here, we build a future where Brooklyn leads by example: a place where people keep more of what they earn, live without fear of government overreach, and pursue happiness on their own terms.

Join us. Volunteer. Donate. Come to a meeting. Help us make Brooklyn the freest, most prosperous borough in the city — and show the rest of New York (and America) what’s possible when liberty is the default.

Liberty starts at home. Liberty starts in Brooklyn.

Our Issues: Liberty for Brooklyn

Brooklyn is a place of incredible energy, diversity, and creativity — but too often, government overreach stifles that spirit. Sky-high rents, endless regulations on small businesses, heavy taxes funding bloated programs, and a criminal justice system that punishes non-violent people while failing to keep communities safe — these aren’t inevitable. They’re the result of policies that put state control over individual freedom.

The Brooklyn Libertarian Party advocates for solutions rooted in personal responsibility, voluntary cooperation, free markets, and the non-aggression principle. We believe Brooklynites — not Albany or Washington — know best how to solve local problems.

Here are the key issues we prioritize:

Housing & Affordability Crisis

Brooklyn’s housing costs are crushing families, artists, and entrepreneurs. Rent stabilization sounds compassionate but creates shortages and black markets. Zoning laws and endless permitting delays block new construction.

Our solution: End government barriers to building. Repeal restrictive zoning, streamline approvals, abolish rent control/regulation distortions, and let the market increase supply. Protect property rights — no eminent domain for private developers. Lower property taxes so owners keep more of what they’ve earned. Result: more homes, lower rents, less displacement.

Economic Freedom & Small Business

From bodegas to tech startups, Brooklyn’s entrepreneurs face crushing taxes, licensing nightmares, and regulations that favor big corporations. High commercial rents and fees drive closures.

Our solution: Slash local taxes and fees. Eliminate unnecessary occupational licenses and permits. Oppose minimum wage mandates — let workers and employers negotiate freely. End corporate welfare and crony handouts. Free markets reward innovation and create jobs without government picking winners.

Criminal Justice & Public Safety

The War on Drugs has devastated communities, filled jails with non-violent offenders, and eroded trust in police. Over-policing minor offenses wastes resources while serious crime persists.

Our solution: End the drug war — decriminalize all consensual acts between adults. Focus law enforcement on real violence and theft, not victimless crimes. Support community-based alternatives, private security where desired, and restorative justice. No qualified immunity for rights-violating officers. True safety comes from respect for rights, not more surveillance or militarization.

Taxes & Government Spending

New Yorkers pay some of the highest taxes in the nation, yet see crumbling infrastructure, failing schools, and endless deficits. Much of it funds programs that don’t work or violate liberty.

Our solution: Cut taxes across the board — starting with property and sales taxes hitting Brooklyn hardest. Phase out wasteful spending. Reject new taxes or fees. Let individuals keep their money to support charities, mutual aid, and voluntary solutions that actually help neighbors.

Education Freedom

Public schools often fail Brooklyn kids, with bureaucracy, one-size-fits-all approaches, and indoctrination over real learning. Parents deserve choices.

Our solution: End compulsory attendance laws and funding tied to zip codes. Support school choice via tax credits or vouchers. Allow homeschooling, unschooling, and private/charter options without red tape. Education should be parent-driven, not state-controlled.

Personal Liberties & Medical Freedom

Your body, your choices — from medical decisions to what you consume. Government mandates during pandemics and beyond showed how quickly freedoms erode.

Our solution: Oppose vaccine or medical mandates. Legalize all drugs for adults. Protect privacy from surveillance. Defend free speech, even when controversial. No government interference in consensual adult relationships or family decisions.

Local Empowerment & Reducing Central Control

Albany and federal rules micromanage Brooklyn life — from street design to business hours.

Our solution: Push for more home rule and decentralization. Let neighborhoods decide zoning, policing priorities, and services via voluntary associations or community boards with real power. Oppose top-down mandates from distant bureaucrats.

Brooklyn First: Liberty Starts Here

These aren’t abstract ideals — they’re practical fixes for the daily frustrations Brooklynites face. By shrinking government and unleashing individual potential, we can make our borough freer, safer, more affordable, and more vibrant.
