The Dubai Tennis Championships is already facing significant player withdrawals, casting a shadow over the prestigious event! It's a tough blow for fans as two prominent stars, Zheng Qinwen and Karolina Muchova, have been forced to pull out. Zheng is sidelined due to illness, while Muchova is battling fatigue. Adding to the list, Maria Sakkari has also withdrawn, also citing illness.
Muchova's decision comes hot on the heels of a monumental achievement: her first WTA 1000 title at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open. Just yesterday, she triumphed over Victoria Mboko with a score of 6-4, 7-5. This victory marks her second career singles title, a significant milestone coming six years after her win at the 2019 Korea Open. It's understandable that after such a demanding win, her body might need a rest.
But here's where it gets interesting... Muchova had initially indicated she might still make it to Dubai. "I haven’t had a second to think about anything yet, but I’ll for sure go to Dubai tomorrow and see how I feel and decide there," she told wtatennis.com on Saturday. This leaves a slight glimmer of hope, but ultimately, the fatigue proved too much.
In the original singles draw, Muchova was scheduled to face qualifier Moyuka Uchijima. Now, Uchijima will instead compete against a lucky loser, Anastasia Zakharova. Meanwhile, Zheng was set to play Peyton Stearns. Stearns, however, secured her spot in the next round after defeating another lucky loser, Magdalena Frech, with a decisive 6-4, 6-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.
And this is the part most people miss... Maria Sakkari's absence also reshapes a highly anticipated first-round match. She was slated to face Iva Jovic [16], who will now play against lucky loser Kamilla Rakhimova. The reshuffling of the draw due to these withdrawals is quite substantial!
Zheng's recent return to the court in Doha was a story in itself. After a hiatus of over five months, she made a strong comeback, reaching the Round of 16. Her first match back against Sofia Kenin was a powerful display, where she fired an impressive 20 aces in a thrilling three-set win. She continued this momentum by defeating Alycia Parks in another three-set battle, before a narrow defeat to the formidable Australian Open champion, Elena Rybakina, with scores of 6-4, 2-6, 5-7. "I hope (by) playing more matches this will get better," Zheng shared in Doha, emphasizing her continuous drive for improvement. Her journey back from elbow surgery last July has been challenging, including a retirement at the China Open and a withdrawal from the Australian Open to focus on her recovery. Despite her solid form in Doha, this current illness has unfortunately halted her progress for Dubai.
Zheng, currently ranked No. 26 in the PIF WTA Rankings, is still on the entry list for the upcoming BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, the season's third WTA 1000 event. We'll be keeping an eye on her recovery and return to the court.
It's also worth noting that World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 2 Iga Swiatek were among other top players who also withdrew from the Dubai event. This wave of withdrawals certainly changes the landscape of the tournament.
