The Players Championship: An Amazing Tournament, But Not a Major?
In a recent interview, Rory McIlroy, a two-time champion of the Players Championship, sparked a lively debate about the status of this prestigious golf tournament. While he acknowledges its greatness, he firmly believes it should not be considered the fifth major.
McIlroy, a traditionalist at heart, values the four historic major championships: the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and The Open. He sees no need to expand this list, even though he admits it would be fantastic to have seven majors instead of five.
"The Players is incredible, there's no denying that," McIlroy said. "It offers an exceptional experience for players and fans alike. The golf course, location, and atmosphere are top-notch. But I stand by the tradition of four majors."
Here's where it gets controversial: McIlroy draws a comparison to the LPGA, which includes five majors on its schedule. He questions whether this format has been successful for women's golf.
"The Players has its own unique identity," he added. "It doesn't need the major label to validate its importance."
McIlroy also shared his thoughts on the PGA Championship, suggesting it should return to its August slot as the final major, a move that would restore its traditional significance.
The debate over the Players' status has been reignited recently, with the PGA Tour's promotional trailer for next month's event, which proclaimed, "March is going to be major." This statement didn't sit well with LIV Golf League captain Phil Mickelson, a former Players champion, who responded on X, "I've won it. It's not."
The Players has always been known for its challenging field, with only one back-to-back champion in its 51-year history, Scottie Scheffler. Mickelson argues that with LIV Golf stars like Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm excluded from the event, the PGA Tour's argument for its difficulty is weakened.
"I'm proud to have won the Players twice," McIlroy concluded. "It stands tall without the major label."
