Richard Osman steps away from the BBC quiz favorite House of Games after an incredible nine-year run
The daily general knowledge show airs on BBC Two on weekdays and has become a staple for many fans.
Osman told his listeners, “I’ve loved every moment. And of course I met my wife through it too.”
Beyond House of Games, he’s best known for his best-selling Thursday Murder Club novels, which were adapted into a Netflix series featuring Dame Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.
Explaining the decision, the presenter and author said: “With writing, there comes a point when you have to pass the baton. I’ve loved doing the show, and I’ll be gutted when I’m no longer part of it.”
Osman also expressed gratitude for the audience’s kindness in an Instagram post, calling the nine years an “amazing” era.
In a BBC statement, Rob Unsworth, head of daytime and early peak commissioning, praised Osman: “Richard Osman has made House of Games one of our most beloved programs. His impact on its success cannot be overstated, and we’re deeply grateful for his nine-year contribution. As we look ahead, we’re excited to reveal who will become the show’s next resident—and we’ll have details soon.”
The BBC noted that the ongoing ninth series attracted around 1.6 million viewers when including catch-up and on-demand viewing over a seven-day window.
Osman previously co-hosted another well-known BBC quiz show, Pointless, with Alexander Armstrong, who continues to host.
In addition to his writing career, Osman has been hosting a podcast with journalist Marina Hyde since 2023.
