Priceless Egyptian Artefacts Recovered: Cat Burglar Arrested in Queensland Museum Heist (2026)

A suspected cat burglar has been apprehended after a daring heist at a Queensland museum, where priceless Egyptian artifacts were stolen. The authorities have arrested a 52-year-old man, with no fixed address, on Russell Island in Moreton Bay. He was taken into custody after police discovered most of the stolen items in a camper van parked at a ferry terminal. Among the artifacts found in his possession was a 2,600-year-old wooden cat sculpture from the 26th dynasty of ancient Egypt, adding to the intrigue of this case. The theft occurred at the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology in Caboolture, north of Brisbane, around 3 a.m. on Friday. The museum's ancient Egypt exhibit was targeted, and a 3,300-year-old necklace and a mummy mask were among the items taken. The police investigation led them to a vehicle of interest parked at the Cleveland ferry terminal, about 80 kilometers from the museum, where they found most of the stolen artifacts. Footage released by the police shows the mummy mask wrapped in a Venezuelan flag inside the vehicle. The artifacts appear to have sustained only minor damage. The suspect was later arrested and charged with breaking and entering and three counts of wilful damage. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, leaving the public intrigued about the motive behind this audacious theft.
